"I've finally found the perfect instrument and there is absolutely no way that I would travel with anything less than the perfect gig bag. The Reunion Blues Continental bass case is the consummate travel companion! Whether train, or plane, or backseat, or even in a trunk, I'm always at ease because RB has me covered!"
Demonterious Lawrence, known in the music world as DETOXXX, is a bassist whose unique style and approach have made him a standout figure in the world of Hip Hop, Soul and R&B music. Born and raised Atlanta, Georgia, Lawrence was exposed to a wide range of genres from an early age. Gospel, Rhythm and Blues, and Jazz filled his home, and it was in church that he first picked up an instrument— initially drums—before discovering the bass guitar in his early teens.
Lawrence’s initial fascination with rhythm soon turned into a deep love for the bass. He was captivated by the instrument’s ability to bridge melody and rhythm, providing the foundation of the music while also possessing the potential for intricate, expressive playing. His early influences included the deep grooves of 70s funk, the improvisational nature of jazz fusion, and the emotive soul stirring of gospel. Inspired by legendary bassists like James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius, John Patitucci and Christian McBride, DETOXXX devoted countless hours to honing his craft, quickly becoming known for his technical proficiency, distinctive sound and extremely solid foundational presence.
Lawrence is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Computer Science. He uses his technical aptitude to enhance his understanding of music and support his creativity through musical technology.
His gift and passion for music has given him the opportunity to travel and perform throughout the country and abroad to such places as China, Australia, Indonesia, Cuba, Dubai, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Japan, Paraguay, Poland, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Mozambique, Tanzania and many other places throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He has served as a cultural ambassador to the United States facilitating workshops on American music through the American Music Abroad program with Jazz at Lincoln Center.
His works as an Atlanta based session bassist were celebrated as his performance (bass) helped the album “Good Kid M.A.A.D. City” by Kendrick Lamar sell over a million copies and receive a nomination for album of the year at the 2014 Grammy Awards. He has also contributed in the last few years as a bassist and composer for a few other Grammy nominated and/or critically acclaimed projects by Avery*Sunshine, Lecrae (Anomaly), Anthony David and Phife from A Tribe Called Quest.
Demonterious travels extensively as the bassist for the incomparable Avery*Sunshine. He has also worked with and/or traveled with such artists as Chanté Moore, Kenny Lattimore, Anthony David, Angie Stone, Eric Roberson, N’Dambi, Zo!, Donnie McClurkin and Anita Wilson.
